The Contra D’Alembert system also helps you lose slowly. On the other hand, if you hit a winning streak, your wins could be quite attractive.

The biggest disadvantage of this system is that you still lose even if you are losing and winning the same amount of wagers. For example, if you win, then lose, then win again, lose again, and then win and then lose, you would still be down by two units.

  • Stake $10, win. Raise stake to $20.

The first step is to decide a sequence of numbers to implement this system upon. Let this sequence be 1-2-3-4.

Once you have identified a sequence, it is time to lay your first wager. This wager amount should be the sum of the first and the last digits in the sequence. In this case, the wager amount would be 1+4=$5.

Now if you win your wager, add this number to the sequence in the end. Now the sequence would be :1-2-3-4-5. On the other hand, if you lose your bet, remove the first and last numbers from the sequence. So, the new sequence would be: 2-3.

In Labouchere, players increase their bets on losing and reducing them after winning. This betting system is quite similar to Martingale, but there is one important difference between the two. The Labouchère does not attempt to recover all the previous losses with a single win; rather it tries to recoup those losses with multiple wins. This is how this system works.

Step 1: Write down a sequence on a piece of paper. Let it be 1-2-3.

Step 2: Your total stake should be the sum of the first and the last numbers, i.e., $4.

Step 3: If you win your wager, remove the first and last numbers from the sequence. Now the sequence becomes “2” only.

Step 4: On the other hand, if you lose your stake, add the staked amount at the end of the original sequence. Thus, the revised sequence is 1-2-3-4.

Suppose the sequence is 1-2-3. The staked value is $4, and if you lose it, the revised sequence is 1-2-3-4. Now the staked amount is $5. If you win this bet, the revised series is 2-3. Now the new bet value is $5. If this money is lost, the new series is 2-3-5. The revised stake amount is 7. If you win this amount then just 3 is left in the series. If this value is also won, then the total win is $15, while the total loss is $9. The net win is $6 which is the sum of the numbers of the original sequence.

Now let’s look at another example:

  • Stake $4 (1+3), lose. Add 4 to the end, 1-2-3-4
  • Stake $5 (1+4), lose. Add 5 to the end, 1-2-3-4-5
  • Wager $6 (1+5), win. Remove 1 and 5, giving 2-3-4
  • Stake $6 (2+4), lose. Add 6 to the end, giving 2-3-4-6
  • Wager $8 (2+6), lose. Add 8 to the end, giving 2-3-4-6-8
  • Bet $10 (2+8), win. Strike off 2 and 8, giving 3-4-6
  • Bet $9 (3+6), win. Strike off 3 and 6, giving 4
  • Wager $4, lose. Add 4 to the end, giving 4-4
  • Bet $8 (4+4), win. Remove 4 and 4, and end the cycle.

In this example, the gambler still makes a net profit of $6 despite posting more losing wagers than the winning ones. In fact, the main concept of the Labouchère system is this: by removing all the numbers in the series, you will post a profit equal to the sum of the numbers of the original series.

Main advantage of Labouchère

The main benefit of this betting system is you can change your betting sequence in the beginning. For example, if you start with a long chain carrying higher numbers, you can post a profit assuming you finish this series.

There is no doubt that this betting system works even if your winning bets are fewer than the losing ones. But there is no guarantee that this situation will remain forever. If you hit a very long losing streak, you will exhaust your bankroll.
